Social Distancing: A Time to Rediscover Self - Brishti Banerjee

“When I discover who I am, I will be free” - Ralph Ellison

When was the last time you sat on your balcony with a cup of your favourite black coffee, wandering how beautifully your money plant is growing so fast and green?
When was the last time you sat with your parents along with that old family photo album?
When was the last time you played home cricket or dolls house together with your child?

Well, while we are together fighting the time of COVID - 19, a time of panic, fear, doubts and social distancing, a time of complete lock down and no office work to do, can we make this time useful in any other way? Well, what about rediscovering ourselves?
In this era of extremely busy schedules and long working hours, keeping in mind that we have got a few days off, why don’t we sit a bit, relax and do what we really wanted to do but never had time? Why don’t we just get to know ourselves on this quarantine?

Here are some ways…

START WITH YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY – Most of us have surely lost track on our hobbies while trying to cope up with our busy schedules. Why don’t we again start now with one? Grab your favourite drawing copy or that old story book piled up in your book shelf.

REVISIT YOUR CHILDHOOD – Childhood is a part of our life that we always cherish, a time that gives us immense joy. Can’t we take a joy ride back? Take out your childhood photo albums, get in touch with your schoolmates through cell phones, find out that favourite toy of yours, listen to your bedtime stories once more or find out that diary of yours which had all of your school life secrets, maybe that rose in still stacked in there, maybe you will laugh out loud?

READ BOOKS – Reading books are always a good idea to pass your time wisely. Start reading one…

EXERCISE – As we all know, exercising helps us in keeping fit physically as well as mentally. Make it a must to follow a home exercise regime for 20 - 30 minutes in a day to beat the quarantine blues.

START DOING SOMETHING NEW – While sitting at home, start an activity that you have never done before. It can be cooking, doing the laundry or maybe writing a book!

SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY - What about some ludo or carom competition with your family members followed by some tea – pakora break? Sounds great no?

USE THIS TIME FOR SELF - IMPROVEMENT - You have been telling yourself for ages that you need to update your blog or study about a subject. Well, what could be a better time right?

WORK ON YOUR RELATIONSHIPS – Solve that old misunderstanding with your friend or sit back and communicate with your partner, spend some quality time. Write a letter about your feelings if you cannot communicate face to face. Working on your relationships and focusing on the good people in your life can definitely make it easier.

ENJOY THE ULTIMATE RELAXATION – While there’s nothing wrong with running around and having fun, it is also necessary to occasionally cancel plans, kick back at home, and really pamper yourself. The moment you take a cool shower, have your favourite lunch followed by the afternoon nap, is the moment you forget why you hated this quarantine!

ALONE TIME IS IMPORTANT – Not only is alone time often an excellent experience, it is also an essential life skill that everyone should have tucked away. So, cancel all your plans, put down your phone and get to hanging out with yourself at times too.

And always remember,
Let your mind breathe…
