Why Is Career Counselling Important? By Shampa Chowdhury

The rapid growth and changes
in the sciences, arts, industrial and technological sectors has left the
modern student and their parents baffled and apprehensive about the direction
to choose , sometimes as early as wards aged 15/16 year old. Multiple
intelligences and the easy availability of information has helped but also
confused. The uncertainty of the lesser known and the disappointments in social
and economic spheres has unsettled our youth. If such fears and stereotypes have
to be controlled the role of career counselling and career counsellors
become even more significant than ever before. And so does the need for
professional, well informed and trained career counsellors. Career
counselling help to clear doubts, fears and myths about courses and their
prospects. It helps the counselee to explore oneself, one's skills and
abilities, one's intelligences based on the development and understanding of
one's personality, attitude and interests. It helps conserve precious
time, energy and money. And most wonderfully, one has a mentor for life in
one's career. Career counselling is the need of the hour as it’s based on testing
that has a high degree of reliability and validity and complemented with
individual counselling which is a deep fulfilling process. It gives one the confidence
to make a beginning, maintain, change when necessary and become a no limit
person. This makes the process of career counselling extremely meaningful
and deeply rewarding.
